Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Explore the winter wonderland of greater Wausau through the thrill of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. With three fantastic trail systems catering to all skill levels, there's something for everyone to enjoy. For those new to the sport, try the Ringle Trail, where classical skiing moves across gently rolling terrain. Intermediate enthusiasts can embark on the adventure of the Big Eau Pleine Park Trail, a scenic route tracing the Eau Pleine Reservoir, featuring a captivating blend of rolling hills and wooded landscapes. These trails are also open for fat tire biking and winter hiking, so the tracks are more backcountry XC skiing style. Seeking the ultimate experience? Head to the Nine Mile County Forest and Recreation Area, boasting a top-notch facility with 33 km of diverse trails, including illuminated paths for nighttime XC skiing. They also maintain groomed snowshoe trails and allow snowshoeing in the woods. Passes are required at Nine Mile and can be purchased online, over the phone, or in person.
