Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin, the Wausau area is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts looking to unwind in nature. With its rolling hills, dense forests, and quiet riverbanks, this region offers countless peaceful spots perfect for stringing up a hammock and soaking in the serenity. Whether you prefer the soft rustle of pine trees, the gentle flow of a nearby stream, or a scenic overlook tucked deep in the woods, Wausau’s parks and natural areas provide the ideal setting to relax and recharge. Of course, the best part of hammocking is its versatility, whether in urban areas or nature. In this blog, however, we’ll guide you through some of the best nature-based hammock spots in the Wausau area; no city noise, just pure Wisconsin wilderness.
NOTE: You can hammock in any City and County park as long as you do not affix anything permanent to a tree or damage a tree!
The Quarry
Tucked away, the Rib Mountain quarry is one of the region’s best-kept open secrets. This unique, bowl-shaped clearing is surrounded by towering rock walls and scattered with glittering pieces of quartzite, a nod to the site’s mining past. A small, shallow pond frequently forms at the bottom, offering a fun spot to explore, while a rimside trail provides a stunning bird’s-eye view into the quarry. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 hour and 13 minutes to complete. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. Finding a spot to hammock can be challenging, depending on the area you are in, as some of the trees are too thin to carry weight. However, with a bit of snooping and exploring, you'll be sure to find your perfect spot to settle.
The easiest way to reach the quarry is via the Turkey Vulture Trail, which starts from Grouse Lane in Wausau. Plug in the GPS coordinates 44.930158, -89.695983 to guide you straight there. For a longer, more challenging approach, you can also hike in from the Red Trail starting at the top of Rib Mountain State Park.
