A morning-to-night itinerary for eating, exploring, playing and discovering one of Central Wisconsin's most welcoming communities

Sometimes travelling can be as easy as steeping in what a community has to offer.

Rothschild, Wisconsin, is a perfect example.

Located just south of Wausau along the Wisconsin River, Rothschild has a little bit of everything you'd want for a full day out: parks and trails, good food, family entertainment, local history, shopping and plenty of opportunities to simply slow down and enjoy the day.

So grab your coffee, put on some comfortable shoes and spend a day with me, exploring Rothschild.

But now let's go into depth.

8:00 a.m. — Start With a Big Breakfast

Every good day trip needs a good breakfast.

Start your morning at Blissful Bites & Brunch, where you can settle in for a hearty breakfast before heading out to explore.

This is the time to order something you wouldn't necessarily make at home. Pancakes, eggs, breakfast favourites, and a good cup of coffee are exactly what you want before a morning outdoors.

But always remember the most important rule: don't skip breakfast.

There is a lot to fit into this day.

9:30 a.m. — Get Outside at Gaska Park

Gaska Park

After breakfast, head to Gaska Park.

This is a great place to start exploring Rothschild's outdoor side. The park offers wooded surroundings and trails, giving you a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy some quiet time before the day's activities get busy.

Rothschild has several parks scattered throughout the community, and Gaska Park is particularly nice for travelers who want to see its greener, more natural side.

You don't need to turn this into a serious hike.

Take a leisurely walk.

Listen to the birds.

Enjoy the trees.

10:30 a.m. — Follow the River

Autumn Wisconsin River

Next, make your way toward River Park and the Wisconsin River.

River Park sits along 525 feet of river frontage and connects with the Wisconsin River Trail system and Cedar Creek Trail. It also provides access to the pedestrian bridge crossing the Wisconsin River — a particularly nice feature for anyone exploring the area on foot or by bike.

The Wisconsin River isn't simply something you drive over on your way somewhere else. It is part of the community. So bring your camera!

If you're traveling with children, let them explore the park and burn off some energy.

And if you're visiting during autumn, give yourself extra time. The surrounding landscape becomes especially beautiful as the leaves begin to change.

11:30 a.m. — Discover Rothschild's History

Before lunch, make a quick stop at the Rothschild Pavilion.

The pavilion is one of the village's most distinctive landmarks and has a fascinating history. It is known for its unusual "floating" wooden dance floor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building continues to host community events and gatherings.

Even if there isn't an event happening during your visit, it's worth seeing the building and learning a little about Rothschild's past.

12:30 p.m. — Lunch, Wisconsin Style

By now, you've earned yourself a substantial lunch.

For something casual and unmistakably Wisconsin, grab a table at Papillon's Pizza.

Pizza is one of those foods that works particularly well on a day trip. You don't need a long, formal lunch, and it’s a delicious way to replace those calories you just hiked off!

2:00 p.m. — Time to Play

Boy jumps at Sawmill Trampoline Park

Now it's time for the part of the day that makes Rothschild particularly good for families.

Head to Sawmill Adventure Park.

The indoor entertainment center combines trampolines and an 18-hole miniature golf course, giving you two very different ways to spend an afternoon. It is one of the area's standout family attractions, and if it wasn’t already obvious: So much fun!

This is also perfect for any last-minute rainy-day changes needed in the plan.

If you're traveling with children, expect to hear:

"Can we stay longer?"

Or

“Please, just five more minutes!”

You have been warned.

4:00 p.m. — Choose Your Afternoon Adventure

Bowling Alley

And now you have a choice:

Option One: Keep Exploring Outside

If the weather is beautiful, head back outside.

Try another section of the local trail system, visit one of Rothschild's neighborhood parks or return to the river.

George Street Park is another option, particularly for families looking for playground space.

Rothschild has an extensive collection of parks so you can easily tailor the afternoon to your group.

Option Two: Catch a Movie

If everyone is ready for some air conditioning and a comfortable seat, head to Cedar Creek Cinema.

Grab some popcorn, watch a movie and give your feet a break.

It might not sound like the most adventurous vacation activity, but sometimes the best plan includes a little downtime.

Option Three: Go Bowling

For a more old-school afternoon, head to Coral Lanes.

Bowling is one of those activities that works for almost every age, and a little friendly competition can make an otherwise ordinary afternoon surprisingly memorable.

Just remember: whoever loses has to buy dessert.

This blog doesn’t make the rules, so don’t blame the messenger.

6:00 p.m. — Dinner

After a full day, it's time for dinner.

For a relaxed evening, The Bar of Wausau is an easy option. It has the casual atmosphere you'd expect from a Wisconsin bar-and-grill and a menu broad enough to suit different appetites.

Another option is Cedar Creek Grill, which offers a more traditional restaurant experience, with a menu that makes it a good choice when you want to sit down and take your time.

And if you're craving pizza after all that activity, there's absolutely nothing wrong with returning to Papillon's.

This is your day.

You make the rules.

And we do not partake in pizza slander in this house.

7:30 p.m. — One Last Walk

Don't go home immediately.

If the weather cooperates, take one last walk near the river or through one of Rothschild's parks.

This is especially nice during the warmer months, when the evening light stretches across the Wisconsin River and the pace of the day begins to slow.

Whether its quiet and reflective or just another gift for your future yourself via the camera roll. You will not regret it.

8:30 p.m. — End the Day Your Way

If you're still looking for something to do, check the local events calendar before your trip.

The Rothschild Pavilion, community organizations, library, and surrounding venues host events throughout the year, there are regular concerts, community gatherings, festivals and other events happening.

Or — and this may be the better option after a full day — find a comfortable spot, grab a final drink or dessert and call it a night.

After all you just did so much!

Why Spend a Day in Rothschild?

Rothschild isn't necessarily the kind of place where you arrive with a checklist of famous landmarks.

But it is Central Wisconsin at its most approachable — relaxed, outdoorsy, welcoming and easy to enjoy.

So the next time you're looking for somewhere to spend a day,

Stop. Stay awhile. See what you find in Rothschild!
