2021 Badger State Fat Bike Guide Prairie Dells Adventure
Three checkpoints over six miles. Beautiful view of the Prairie River and Manthei Marsh. Deer and predator tracks often. Geese on special occasions.
Vertical Challenge Five checkpoints over eleven miles. Add endless hills to your Prairie Dells Adventure.
Lake Exploration Seven checkpoints over sixteen or so miles. This addition crosses four beautiful bodies of water.
These routes offer the best chance of ideal conditions over groomed trail. There are weeks when a full 25 miles of winter trail are open for your exploration, but that mileage is hard to maintain for five weeks in a row. It rains. It blizzards. No guarantees.
Swag, probably a Badger State neck gaiter or other surprise, will be found at the swag stump on Goose Island on the Prairie River.
You are responsible for yourself out there. Said it.
Register yourself on the Badger State Winter Games website to be eligible for awards.
All proceeds go toward the maintenance of this unique trail system.
Rules are here to keep things fun, safe and fair. Record your time and post your selfies to Strava or other media. Upload the link to the form that will be accessible from Badger State Games and the Underdown Dells Project Facebook page between February 12th and March 14th. No bonus points will be awarded for riding style, artistic photos or even spotting live geese; however, entertaining selfies will likely be reposted. Have fun out there in the wild.
Trail conditions will change as we all know. Winter snow will evolve the early bushwack lines into groomed trail, especially along the Prairie River where new lines are ready from the Candy Cliffs to Goose Island once grooming snow falls. You may choose your route to checkpoints, but groomed snowmobile and ski trails are off limits except for Horn Lake Road. Follow trail updates on the Underdown Dells Project Facebook page.
Prairie Dells Adventure 6 Mile Course
1. Take a selfie or pose your bike on any bench overlooking the Prairie Dells gorge.
2. Take a photo at the swag stump on Goose Islands and find your Badger State swag behind it. Goose sightings a bonus.
3. Take a shot from any bench overlooking the Manthei wildlife marsh.
You are just upstream from the ill-fated Prairie Dells Dam.
*Routes will vary based on current snow conditions, but checkpoints do not move. Bikes are not allowed on groomed snowmobile or ski trails except for Horn Lake Road. Follow Underdown Dells Project on Facebook for current conditions.
Vertical Challenge 11 Mile Course
4. Here you add five miles of pure hills. Pose your bike on the top of Side by Each on the Disconnector Trail.
5. You’ll be telling by the smelling that you’ve found Landfill Hill on the Connector Trail heading for home. Take a picture with the random sign at the summit.
Lake Exploration 16 Mile Course
Legendary moonshiner and homesteader Bill Underdown lived near the first lake west of the Connector Trail.
6. Snap a picture at the Dog Lake Shelter.
7. Put the island on Underdown Lake in the background of your next shot.
Copper Lake Road
25 miles of fat bike singletrack are open when conditions allow. Come back in summer for 35 miles of backwoods singletrack and the Thunderdown on August 21st, 2021. Dog Lake, Mist Lake, Horn Lake Road Disconnector Connector
*Registration includes BSG Gaiter Mask.
Gaiter Mask will be hidden out on the course! Details to follow.
