Ginseng

Sure, cheese is big, dairy is huge, and maple syrup is popular; but it's a little root that grows in Marathon County that Wisconsin corners the market on. Over 95% of the ginseng root exported from the United States comes from Central Wisconsin. Ginseng has been used in eastern cultures for its healing properties for over 5000 years. It takes four years for a ginseng crop to mature to the point where it can be harvested. As you drive around Marathon County, you'll see tarp-covered fields protecting ginseng plants from direct sunlight. Although ginseng does not taste like chicken, it is believed to have a wide range of health benefits including an anti-cancer effect and improving energy levels, much like mom's chicken soup. Before you head home, pick some up at Hsu's Ginseng Enterprises located north of Wausau at T6819 County Hwy W.

Whitewater Park & Kayak Course
One of the top whitewater courses in the United States is located in Downtown Wausau on the Wisconsin River. This is your chance to see a live kayak course up close. This water-controlled course is open May through September and is host to national and world-class kayak competitions each summer. Wausau Kayak/Canoe Corporation based out of Whitewater Park in Downtown Wausau is one of the top whitewater programs in the United States. The WK & CC can teach you the basics at a paddling camp and you can practice at open water sessions held each month. The less adventurous can enjoy this unique waterway from a distance on the Riverwalk, a paved trail that follows the Wisconsin River. Mountain-Bay Trail
Don't leave the bicycles behind; we've got the scenic Mountain-Bay Trail waiting for you. This former railroad corridor is now a 14 foot wide trail with a crushed granite surface that stretches 83 miles from Weston to Green Bay. If you're looking for something with hills, try the Nine Mile Forest. Cross-country ski trails (without the snow) make for excellent mountain biking. For the adventurous, try to tame the maze of single-track trails cut into this heavily forested area.
Poniatowski and the Reitbrock Geographical Marker
When it comes to geography, here's your chance to "one up" your neighbor and amaze your friends. Right here in Marathon County is the exact center of the Northwest Hemisphere. That's right, half way between the Equator and the North Pole and half way between Greenwich Meridian and the International Date Line. There are only four places like this in the entire world with two being under water and the other in China. Don't pass up your best chance to get "centered" and visit what may be the smallest park in the United States. Check our map of Marathon County for the Reitbrock Geographical Marker's location.
Rib Mountain State Park
There's more than one reason to visit the fourth highest point in Wisconsin. Rib Mountain State Park has camping, hiking trails, concerts in the summer, snowshoeing in the winter, and a spectacular view of our Wisconsin River Valley anytime of the year. Climb the stairs to the top of the observation tower to see breathtaking Fall Colors in late September and early October. Located at exit 188 I-39/Hwy 51.
Ice Age Trail
Extremely rare today, mammoth sightings were common 10,000 years ago crossing what is now known as the Ice Age Trail. The Ice Age Trail, 1000 miles long, outlines the last glacial advance into Wisconsin and is only 1 of 8 National Scenic Trails in the United States. You can hike it when it's warm or strap on the snowshoes in the winter. The developed section of the Ice Age Trail in Marathon County is currently 35 miles long and consists of 5 segments. The Eau Claire Dells Segment (53/4 miles long) is the most popular and originates at the county park of the same name.
