Fishing

The Wisconsin River flows between the banks in six of our seven communities, providing prime opportunities for the avid angler. The Eau Claire River and the Rib River merge with the Wisconsin River to form the uniquely shaped Lake Wausau, home to many trophy fish, right in the heart of the Wausau area. Picturesque Half Moon Lake just a few miles down river is a fisherman’s haven, surrounded by the beauty of nature and loaded with a variety of fish species. Musky, walleye, crappie, northern pike, catfish, bluegill, bass, sunfish and yellow perch are present in most of the lakes, rivers and reservoir in the central Wisconsin area.

There are over 16 boat landings between Wausau and Knowlton giving you access to The Wisconsin River, Rib River, Eau Claire River, Lake Wausau, Half Moon Lake, Mosinee Flowage, Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, Lake DuBay and Mission Lake. See our Boat Landing Map for specific locations.

Other great fishing spots in the Wausau area include Oak Island Park and Gilbert Park in Wausau, Bluegill Bay Park in Rib Mountain and the Schofield Dam.

During winter months there are plenty of "hard water" fishing opportunities in the Wausau area. The progression from cloth-laden bodies on buckets, to little communities of ice shanties appear as soon as the ice is solid. This is a totally different fishing experience. Cook outs, football passing, TV watching, until the flags pop up. Life stops as everyone rushes to the hole in hopes of pulling out a whopper. You don’t want to miss this fun!

For more information on fishing regulations and buying a license contact the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources by calling 715-359-4522 or visit their website.

For more information on boat launch fees and regulations contact the Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department at 715-261-1550 or visit their website.
