Bern Wetland
This forest is approximately 269 acres in size. The Bern Wetland is over 50 percent wetland with the remainder consisting of aspen/hardwood forest.

Big Rapids Park
Big Rapids Park is one of Marathon County's larger nature parks at 33 acres and is comprised of two sections along the Big Eau Pleine River in the Town of Eau Pleine.
The Lower Area features picnic tables, a swim beach, picnic area, vault restrooms and a dumpster.

Bitzke Waterfowl Refuge
Located in the Harrison-Hewitt Forest, the Bitzke Waterfowl Refuge encompasses a number of wetlands and impoundments, with some sections including boardwalks through wetlands. The Bitzke Bird Walk trail includes interpretive displays and many opportunities for viewing waterfowl.

Bluegill Bay Park
Bluegill Bay Park is one of the area's most scenic parks offering 68-acres to enjoy activities on Lake Wausau, picnic, hike and more. The North section (enter from Oriole Lane) features a boat landing, benches, picnic area, a well, an open shelter, flush toilets, walking trails, volleyball court (provide your own net), dumpster, and a paved path.

Chellis Park
Chellis Park is located on 3 acres of land and includes both woodlands and wetlands as well as a recreation area. This neighborhood park features a picnic shelter, basketball court, playground equipment as well as a large open grassy area for games along with a walking trail and a designated bluebird trail to observe nesting bluebirds and songbirds, created as part of an Eagle Scout project.

Cherokee Park
Cherokee Park is one of Marathon County's largest natural parks located on the Big Eau Pleine River. It comprises 69 acres along the Big Eau Pleine River, with an impoundment that provides for swimming and fishing.

Dells of the Eau Claire Park

Campground: 28 sites, 16 w/electricity, self-registration for numbered sites, gravel camp areas, vault toilet, wood shed, manager contact cottage, 1 picnic table per campsite, water pump, recycling station, dumpster. South Unit: Open shelter with permanent picnic tables, state natural area, hiking trail to High Bridge and trail connects to the Ice Age Trail, pit toilets, scattered picnic tables.

The George W. Mead Wildlife Area is nestled in the center of Wisconsin and contains over 33,000 acres of wetlands, forests and grasslands.

Harrison-Hewitt Forest
This is the largest of the Marathon County forest units at over 9,000 acres in size. This unit is located in the NE corner of the county, between the cities of Wausau and Antigo.

Kronenwetter Forest Unit
This 5,000 acre forest is located SE of Wausau and joins the Leather Camp forest unit on the southern end. This unit has excellent hiking and equestrian trails, as well as designated snowmobile trails in the winter.

Leather Camp Forest Unit
This 5,000 acre forest unit is Marathon County's designated Ruffed Grouse Management Area. This forest is specifically managed to provide excellent grouse and woodcock habitat and consequently receives substantial hunting pressure in the fall.

McMillan Marsh
Located near the headwaters of the Little Eau Pleine River, McMillan Marsh Wildlife Area is a diverse landscape of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. The area is approximately 6,500 acres, is located in the southwest corner of Marathon County, just one mile north of the city limits of Marshfield.

Mountain-Bay State Trail
The Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State Park Trail that occupies the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Wausau and Green Bay. The trail right-of-way was acquired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1994 by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources under the federal Rails to Trails Program.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area

Cross country ski trails are double tracked with a skating lane and are generally one-way. The ski chalet has a changing area, restrooms, and a spacious warming area with a wood stove.

Oak & Fern Island Parks

Oak Island in downtown Wausau features a Rose Bowl baseball diamond (Junior and Senior League) with lights for nighttime play, bleacher seating and drinking fountain. Other amenities include six lighted tennis courts, skateboard park, boat landing with dock, a grill pit, paved path, drinking fountain, flush toilets with sinks, playground equipment, two open shelters, grills, picnic tables, pathways with benches, dumpsters, recycling station, and a connecting bridge to Fern Island.

This is a small city park with a 20 foot bluff offering great views of Lake Wausau, with stairs descending to the lake for fishing. The park offers playground equipment, grills, picnic tables, portable toilets.

Also known as "Manmade" Park, Sunny Vale is a popular 299-acre park with facilities for swimming in Manmade Lake, picnicking, fishing, and model airplane flying. During the winter months, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the hiking trail and paths for snowshoeing.

Winding Creek State Rearing Area
The Winding Creek State Rearing Area is has 193 acres of property consisting of hardwood forest and some grasslands. Recreational opportunities include hunting, trapping, hiking, cross country skiing (no developed trails), bird watching and berry picking.
