The Wausau area has miles and miles of great walking and hiking trails, offering scenic views and plenty to explore.

Rib Mountain State Park
One of the oldest rock formations on earth, Rib Mountain State Park stands proudly in the middle of Wausau/Central Wisconsin. With over 1,500 acres, the park boasts a well-maintained network of hiking and nature trails throughout the wooded area. The nature trails meander through the park’s rocky outcroppings, offering fun places to climb or sit and enjoy the views. For an overview of the trail system, use the Rib Mountain Summer Recreation Map or visit the Rib Mountain State Park website.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area
Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area is marked and mowed during the summer months to provide over 20 miles of varying terrain that is shared with mountain bikers and horse riding enthusiasts. Trail fees are required for biking at Nine Mile. For an overview of the trail system, use our Nine Mile Summer Recreation Map or visit the Marathon County website.

Dells of the Eau Claire County Park
The Dells of the Eau Claire County Park is one of the special jewels in the Marathon County park system, with ancient volcanic rock palisades and potholes carved in the rock by the falling water creating a unique place at the dells and gorge. Over five miles of trails run along both sides of the Eau Claire River.

Big Eau Pleine County Park
Offering over 10 miles of trails shared with mountain bikers and horse riding enthusiasts, the Big Eau Pleine County Park is a great hiking spot with views of the Big Eau Pleine Flowage.

The Andrew Warren Historic District & East Hill
Located on the northeast edge of downtown Wausau, the Andrew Warren Historic District and East Hill is a great place to walk while taking in the charming and historic architecture of Wausau. The East Hill also provides some serious cardio if you are so inclined!

Take a walk on the Barker-Stewart Island Interpretative Trail! Be transformed from the city center to the country after you traverse the bridge. Experience the history of the island, the natural beauty of the view and the harnessing of renewable energy on this 1/2 mile stroll starting at Bull Falls Park located north of Scott Street Bridge.

Big Rapids Park
Big Rapids Park is one of Marathon County's larger nature parks at 33 acres and is comprised of two sections along the Big Eau Pleine River in the Town of Eau Pleine.

The Lower Area features picnic tables, a swim beach, picnic area, vault restrooms and a dumpster.

Bitzke Waterfowl Refuge
Located in the Harrison-Hewitt Forest, the Bitzke Waterfowl Refuge encompasses a number of wetlands and impoundments, with some sections including boardwalks through wetlands. The Bitzke Bird Walk trail includes interpretive displays and many opportunities for viewing waterfowl.

Bluegill Bay Park
Bluegill Bay Park is one of the area's most scenic parks offering 68-acres to enjoy activities on Lake Wausau, picnic, hike and more. The North section (enter from Oriole Lane) features a boat landing, benches, picnic area, a well, an open shelter, flush toilets, walking trails, volleyball court (provide your own net), dumpster, and a paved path.

Cherokee Park is one of Marathon County's largest natural parks located on the Big Eau Pleine River. It comprises 69 acres along the Big Eau Pleine River, with an impoundment that provides for swimming and fishing.

The forest is 280 acres in size, with the majority of the vegetation oak and northern hardwood, and some pine plantations, aspen, and cedar swamp. The forest is open to recreational uses such as hunting, snowmobiling, hiking, and camping.

Gaska Park has 40 acres and offers a ball diamond, volleyball court, playground, and a small outdoor shelter with restrooms. There is a year-round trail system with bridges that provide cross-country ski opportunities in the winter with a paved area for parking.

Kellyland Park
Kellyland Park formerly known as Rogan Park originally started out as just a soccer park and has developed into a multiuse park over the years. Besides being a community park this park also serves as the parking lot and access point for the Weston Dog Park.

Kennedy Park
Kennedy Park Kennedy Park features the Weston Aquatic Center, baseball and soccer fields, skate board park, ice skating and hockey rink, and a shelter area. The Aquatic Center was designed for all ages with its walk-in shallow area, the water tower water slide, water climbing structures, water ride areas, a sandy play area, sunbathing area, and grassy picnic areas.

Kronenwetter Forest Unit
This 5,000 acre forest is located SE of Wausau and joins the Leather Camp forest unit on the southern end. This unit has excellent hiking and equestrian trails, as well as designated snowmobile trails in the winter.

Leather Camp Forest Unit
This 5,000 acre forest unit is Marathon County's designated Ruffed Grouse Management Area. This forest is specifically managed to provide excellent grouse and woodcock habitat and consequently receives substantial hunting pressure in the fall.

Marathon County Park
Marathon County Park Marathon Park is characterized by a large stand of mature white pines, which are highly visible along Stewart Avenue and serve as a sort of landmark gateway into the City of Wausau. Located on 78 acres with 35 campsites just outside downtown Wausau, the park provides a large number of facilities and programs.

Located near the headwaters of the Little Eau Pleine River, McMillan Marsh Wildlife Area is a diverse landscape of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. The area is approximately 6,500 acres, is located in the southwest corner of Marathon County, just one mile north of the city limits of Marshfield.

Mountain-Bay State Trail
The Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State Park Trail that occupies the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Wausau and Green Bay. The trail right-of-way was acquired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1994 by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources under the federal Rails to Trails Program.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area Cross country ski trails are double tracked with a skating lane and are generally one-way. The ski chalet has a changing area, restrooms, and a spacious warming area with a wood stove.

Oak & Fern Island Parks Oak Island in downtown Wausau features a Rose Bowl baseball diamond (Junior and Senior League) with lights for nighttime play, bleacher seating and drinking fountain. Other amenities include six lighted tennis courts, skateboard park, boat landing with dock, a grill pit, paved path, drinking fountain, flush toilets with sinks, playground equipment, two open shelters, grills, picnic tables, pathways with benches, dumpsters, recycling station, and a connecting bridge to Fern Island.

This 27-acre community park has approximately 3400 feet of shoreline on the Wisconsin River and is partially wooded. The park features two public boat landings (one improved and one unimproved) with available boat trailer parking and provides access to the Wisconsin River above the Mosinee Dam.

This park, geared exclusively to our four legged canine friends, sits on almost 40 acres adjacent to Kellyland Park. The dog park is fully fenced and dogs are allowed to run free within the park and also features separate fenced area for small dog training and exercise, mowed walking paths, pet watering station, waste bag dispensers, picnic area, ample parking and restrooms.
