Food & Drink

You don’t have to look far in the Wausau area to find wonderful, handcrafted meals prepared by chefs with a real passion for food.  The use of locally-sourced ingredients including high quality meats and seafood, fresh dairy and cheese products, and organic vegetables are sought out by many local chefs.

Chef and co-owner of the Back When Cafe, Jolene Lucci, expresses her attention to detail in the kitchen through the menu, which features many seasonal ingredients like walleye, pheasant, wild mushrooms, and herbs.

For generations, Carmelo’s Italian Restaurant has prepared authentic Italian dishes and perfected the art of pasta making.  Carmelo’s also offers a superb Friday night fish fry; an iconic Wisconsin tradition.  Served with tarter sauce and classic side dishes such as coleslaw, you’ll find this Friday night special at corner pubs and upscale restaurants alike.

The City Grill Bistro has signature entrees like the sous vide beef short ribs, which are hand seasoned, infused with jus de veau and slow braised for hours, and then served with sides such as Yukon Gold potatoes.

At the Wagon Wheel Supper Club, genuine charcoal-broiled cuisine has been a tradition since 1946 and the restaurant specializes in hand cut, dry-aged steaks grilled to perfection over wood fire coals.

The Pinewood Supper Club uses the freshest seasonal ingredients, seafood, and meats available for their menu. They also maintain a herd of Myotonic (or fainting) goats that help their sustainability efforts.  The goats consume the organic materials that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.  In turn, they provide nutrients for the restaurant’s flower beds.

The Red Eye Brewing Company continues to incorporate environmentally friendly initiatives to create wonderful food and artisan beers.  From solar panels atop the roof, which are utilized by the brew house to heat water, to 100% organic house made buns, Red Eye sources food from local farmers markets for maximum quality and sustainability.

Delicious food made with care and the best ingredients is on the menu at many Wausau area dining establishments.  If you don’t already consider yourself a “foodie,” you just might after sampling some great local cuisine.

The Central Wisconsin area also offers fresh Wisconsin cheese, Pick Your Own berries, a wide selection of fresh meats, and great pub fare and beverages!  There is nothing you can't find here in Wausau!
