The Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State Park Trail that occupies the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Wausau and Green Bay. The trail right-of-way was acquired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1994 by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources under the federal Rails to Trails Program. The entire 83.4-mile trail extends from Marathon County through Shawano County and into Brown County ending just west of Green Bay in the Village of Howard. Each county is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of its own segment. The trail travels through a variety of agricultural, forest, and wetland landscapes that exhibit many of the glacial landforms in Wisconsin. The trail links with the Ice Age National Recreation Trail in Marathon County, the Wiouwash Trail in Shawano County, and a network of trails in Brown County.

The Marathon County portion contains 18 miles for hiking and biking in the summer, as well as snowmobiling in winter months. The trailhead is located behind the Weston Municipal Center at 5500 Schofield Avenue. Parking and restroom facilities are available. Daily or season passes are required for trail use for bicycles.

Bicycling and hiking during snow-free periods in all three counties; Horseback riding during snow-free periods in Shawano County; Snowmobiling as conditions permit in Marathon and Shawano Counties. Park and ride trail head for Marathon County snowmobile trail system in winter months is located at R7110 Town Hall Road in Ringle. ATV's are prohibited on the Mountain-Bay Trail all year round.

A trail fee is required for bicycle use. Passes may be purchased at each Park Department listed below, and at Rib Mountain State Park, the Weston Municipal Center, City Bike Works, Sprocketz Bike Shop, Rib Mountain Cycles, Builer's Cycle and Fitness Center, TREK Store of Wausau and the Weston Inn during the summer, and on weekends during the summer season at the Mountain-Bay Trail Head building, 5550 Municipal Street. Daily trail pass: $4. This pass is valid only for the day of purchase and can be used on all sections of the Mountain-Bay State Trail. Daily passes are also available at self-registration stations along the trail. Annual trail passes: $20. This pass is valid all year on ALL State trails.

The Mountain-Bay State Trail is also a great location for bird watching. Best time to visit is early June. Best areas are located in the far eastern side of Marathon County near Norrie Lake. Stay on trail at all times to avoid trespessing. Trail is flat and easy to hike or bike.
