If your visit with friends or business colleagues in Wausau includes plans for a memorable dining experience, it's a good bet your local hosts will suggest Lucci's Back When Cafe. Located on historic 3rd Street in Wausau's lively Downtown River District, the Back When Cafe has built an excellent reputation for providing upscale fare in a casual, welcoming environment.

When proprietors Glenn and Jolene Lucci came to Wausau nearly 20 years ago from San Francisco, they immediately fell in love with the community's small-town charm, and they saw a downtown packed with potential. With their extensive backgrounds in food and wine, the Luccis soon opened the Back When Cafe in a vintage storefront. The success of the restaurant has been marked by numerous changes, including several additions and renovations, all the while maintaining the historic feel that adds to the Back When experience. An original tin ceiling, dating to the late 1800s, overlooks the bar and main dining room, dubbed "The Old Room," with walls lined with historic photographs that go back to Wausau's logging days, along with an interesting collection of antiques and paintings. The recently renovated 'Green Room' features an open, atrium-style ambiance. A through-wall fireplace adds a cozy touch to both dining rooms, while the garden patio offers al fresco diners gentle summer breezes, beautiful flora and the sound of nearby church bells.

Glenn and Jolene take great pride in their high-quality cuisine: fresh fish, 100% certified Angus beef, prime game bird and organic vegetables, with much of their produce grown locally. Menus tempt taste buds with innovative, healthy choices featuring Italian, French and American influences. There are two dinner menus, one offering year-round favorites including, walleye, beef tenderloin, salmon, and pastas (the meatball pasta is "to die for"). A seasonal dinner menu is constantly changing, with specials like a 28-oz bone-in ribeye named "The Tomahawk," wild pheasant, Chilean sea bass, duck, and free-range chicken. For smaller appetites, numerous appetizers and light dinners are also available.

For oenophiles, Glenn has amassed an excellent wine list, with varietals from California, Oregon, Washington, South America and Italy. And when you stop in, be sure to try one of Glenn's best-in-town Cosmopolitans or Lemon Drop Martinis. If a martini isn't your thing, you might consider sampling from the extensive collection of micro-brews.

The restaurant has several rooms on an upper level that are frequently used for business gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries, showers, or for those who just want an intimate dinner. The Luccis' catering services are in demand for events from small in-home gatherings to large weddings.
